Synthetic fuels (SynFuels, E-Fuels, Future Fuels)

Synthetic fuels, also known as e-fuels or power-to-X products, are artificially produced fuels based on hydrogen and carbon. They are produced from renewable electricity and do not differ in their properties from fossil fuels.

Definition of synthetic fuels
Synthetic fuels are energy carriers produced from renewable energy sources by electrolysis and chemical synthesis. They contain hydrogen and carbon and are known as e-fuels. These fuels can be used in existing combustion engines and contribute to decarbonization.

Background / Origin
Synthetic fuels emerged in response to the need for lower-emission alternatives to fossil fuels. They are produced using renewable electricity from wind and solar energy. Water is split into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) using electrolysis. The hydrogen is then combined with carbon or carbon dioxide (CO₂) to produce various synthetic fuels. The products obtained include synthetic diesel fuel, synthetic gasoline, heating oil and kerosene. Synthetic fuels are used in the areas of mobility, heating and industrial processes. They offer the possibility of replacing fossil fuels with climate-neutral alternatives, which should play a key role in decarbonization by 2050. Production currently takes place mainly in research and pilot projects, and large quantities can be obtained particularly where there is an oversupply of renewable electricity.

International initiatives and partnerships, such as the collaboration with HIF (Highly Innovative Fuels) and the P2X Europe joint venture, aim to develop and market innovative energy solutions. Synthetic fuels could therefore play a key role in the global market for renewable energies and fossil alternatives.

Differentiation from similar terms
- Fossil fuels: Based on natural hydrocarbons, while synthetic fuels are produced artificially.
- Biofuels: Are obtained from biological materials, in contrast to synthetic fuels, which are produced from electricity and CO₂.
