The distillates obtained are then discharged into appropriate storage tanks.

Most of the products removed from this fractionation column are not yet marketable. They are therefore usually subject to further chemical processes in order to produce new compounds or modify existing ones. The aim is to remove impurities such as organic compounds containing sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen, water, dissolved metals or inorganic salts. After these post-treatments, the fractions are mixed, cooled and prepared for transportation to tank farms.

While refining is aimed at splitting and conversion, direct combustion is aimed at using the crude oil in its unprocessed state. Furthermore, chemical conversion processes that take place during refining are not the same as distillation, which is merely a physical separation method.
